FEBRUARY 9, 2008 WORKDAY RE-CAP:

Here's a BIG THANK YOU to all who participated in today's project. 29 members donated over 1,500 miles and 178 "man-hours" that equated to $5,220.23 in matching funds towards our grant requirements. All I can say is...."Way to go !!!"

There were 8 nursery boxes and over 100 transplant cages built in less than 8 hours at the San Jacinto River Authority site. Only the right group of conservation minded folks could have pulled off such an event, that would have rivaled an old-fashioned "barn raising" from the 19th century. SCBC displayed such a high degree of professionalism, that even our partners (TPWD & SJRA) could not stop giving praise while witnessing the work.

Mark Webb (TPWD): "Ron...I have never seen ANY group that I have worked with, be as prepared as SCBC was today. I thought all the way from Bryan about how I could forward suggestions/corrections if the need presented itself. But after watching the work, I realized that there was nothing that I could have said to improve the quality of the work. I have worked with other groups where it took them over an hour to get started, and another hour to argue about what they were going to do for lunch. This group is definitely prepared and qualified to do this work...I am very impressed."

Brett Rhaley (SJRA): "Watching this is incredible. It's like watching a bee hive. I had no idea that you all were this dedicated to helping with conservation. Blake (Kellum...Lake Conroe Manager for the SJRA) called me this afternoon and asked how the project was going. I told him that he was not going to believe the results when he saw them. I told Blake that these people not only know what they are doing, but that they were good at it too.

Larry LeBlanc (Outdoor Writer-The Courier): Ron, this is fantastic...better than I anticipated. People need to know what you folks are doing here. I can't wait to get home and put this story together.

Although praise from our partners is not what should motivate us, it is great to know that we have their respect. Perhaps that fact will give us more credibility towards getting our voices heard in the future.

Again...a super day of work today. There are many who will be a little sore tomorrow, but hopefully you can enjoy in the fact that what happened today will help in saving a wonderful body of water that we all enjoy.
